JOSE MARIE STA. IGLESIA—DIAMONDS IN DIAPERS
Diamonds in Diapers is an exhibition by the Filipino-Dutch artist Jose Marie Sta. Iglesia (1990). The work is an extravagant couture fashion collection inspired by the controversial Imelda Marcos, the influential former first lady who used her wealth and beauty as populist tools to engage in politics in the Philippines; Jose Marie’s country of origin. “I have to look beautiful so that the poor will have a star to look at from their slums.” as said by Imelda Marcos in the documentary The Kingmaker.
To fully capture the political dimensions of Jose Marie’s work, the project space at Das Leben am Haverkamp will be transformed into a luxurious setting where the seductive power of fashion and ornamentation will take on a new meaning within the context of the Marcos regime. Through this means, Jose Marie questions the role of fashion and beauty as political tools.
Jose Marie: “Diamonds in Diapers can mean a lot of things. It is the gap in our society, it can be cheap and expensive or the good and the bad. The line between opulence and tackiness, that spot between perfume and rot. Diamonds in Diapers is the embodiment of Imelda Marcos persona. I hope to contribute to raising questions, awareness and discussion on how we can make our society better.”
You are invited to join the screening of the documentary The Kingmaker by Lauren Greenfield and a Q&A with Jose Marie on 5 June.
